How to Record IPTV: DVR Setup Guide for TiviMate & Smarters (2026)

Learn how to record IPTV with TiviMate Premium, schedule recordings, set up storage, and use Catch-Up TV as an alternative to DVR recording.

One of the most common questions from IPTV users is: “Can I record live TV?” The answer is yes — but it depends on your IPTV player app and device. Unlike cable TV with a dedicated DVR box, IPTV recording requires the right combination of app, storage, and configuration.

This guide covers everything about recording IPTV: which apps support it, how to set up recording in TiviMate, storage requirements, scheduled recording, and why Catch-Up TV might be a better alternative for most users.

Can You Record IPTV?

Yes, but with important caveats:

MethodAvailabilityQualityEase of Use
TiviMate Premium RecordingAndroid TV, FirestickSame as stream (up to 4K)Easy
Kodi PVR RecordingWindows, Mac, Android, XboxSame as streamModerate
VLC RecordingWindows, MacSame as streamEasy
MAG Box RecordingMAG devicesSame as streamEasy
Catch-Up TV (Alternative)Most IPTV appsSame as streamEasiest

Important distinction: IPTV recording saves the raw stream to your local storage. This is different from cloud DVR (like YouTube TV or Hulu Live), where recordings are stored on the provider’s server. With IPTV, you need local storage space on your device or an attached USB drive.

TiviMate Premium is the best IPTV recording solution. It offers both instant recording and scheduled recording through the EPG grid, making it the closest experience to a traditional DVR.

Requirements:

  • TiviMate Premium subscription ($4.99/year or $19.99 lifetime).
  • An Android TV device or Amazon Firestick.
  • Storage space: internal storage, USB drive, or external hard drive.

Setting Up Recording Storage

Before you can record, you need to configure where recordings will be saved.

Step 1: Choose your storage location.

Storage OptionProsConsRecommended For
Internal StorageAlready available, no extra hardwareLimited space (8 to 32 GB shared with apps)Short recordings, testing
USB Flash DriveAffordable, portableLimited to 128 to 256 GB typicallyModerate recording
USB External Hard DriveLarge capacity (1 to 4 TB)Needs power, less portableHeavy recording, DVR replacement
MicroSD CardCompact, affordableSpeed varies, smaller capacityFirestick users

Step 2: Connect your external storage (if using USB).

  1. Plug your USB drive or external hard drive into your device’s USB port.
  2. Your device should detect the drive. If prompted, select Use as portable storage (not device storage).
  3. Note: Firestick 4K Max and Fire TV Cube have USB ports. Basic Firestick models require a USB OTG adapter.

Step 3: Configure TiviMate recording path.

  1. Open TiviMate.
  2. Go to Settings > Recordings.
  3. Select Recording Path.
  4. Navigate to your USB drive or external storage.
  5. Select a folder or create a new one (e.g., “IPTV Recordings”).
  6. Confirm the path.

Recording a Live Channel

Instant recording:

  1. Tune to the channel you want to record.
  2. Press the OK/Select button on your remote to bring up the channel overlay.
  3. Select the Record button (circle icon).
  4. TiviMate will start recording immediately.
  5. A red recording indicator will appear on screen.
  6. To stop recording, press OK again and select the Record button.

What happens during recording:

  • The recording saves the raw stream to your configured storage path.
  • You can continue watching the channel while recording.
  • You can switch to a different channel — the recording continues in the background.
  • Recording quality matches the stream quality (if the channel is 1080p, the recording is 1080p).

Scheduling a Recording via EPG

TiviMate’s scheduled recording is its most powerful DVR feature. You can browse the EPG, find a future program, and schedule a recording in advance — just like a cable DVR.

  1. Open the EPG guide (press the Guide button on your remote, or navigate to the EPG from the menu).
  2. Browse to a future program you want to record.
  3. Highlight the program and press OK/Select.
  4. Select Record from the options menu.
  5. TiviMate will show the scheduled start and end time.
  6. Confirm the recording.
  7. At the scheduled time, TiviMate will automatically tune to the channel and start recording.

Scheduled recording tips:

  • Your device must be powered on (or in standby/sleep mode) for scheduled recordings to work. It cannot be completely shut off.
  • TiviMate will switch to the recording channel at the scheduled time, even if you are watching something else.
  • You can schedule multiple recordings, but simultaneous recordings require your IPTV subscription to support multiple connections.

Managing Recordings

  1. Go to Recordings from the TiviMate main menu.
  2. All completed and in-progress recordings are listed with:
    • Channel name
    • Program title (from EPG)
    • Date and time
    • Duration
    • File size
  3. Select a recording to play it back.
  4. Use the Delete option to remove recordings and free up storage.

TiviMate Recording File Format

TiviMate saves recordings in TS (Transport Stream) format. This is a standard video container format that can be played by:

  • TiviMate itself
  • VLC Media Player
  • Kodi
  • Most modern media players

If you need a different format (MP4, MKV), you can convert the TS file using free tools like HandBrake or FFmpeg on a computer.

For complete TiviMate setup, see our TiviMate setup guide.

Method 2: Recording with VLC on Windows/Mac

VLC can record IPTV streams on Windows and Mac computers. This is the simplest recording method for PC users.

Steps

  1. Open VLC Media Player on your computer.
  2. Go to Media > Open Network Stream (Ctrl+N / Cmd+N).
  3. Paste your channel’s stream URL or M3U URL.
  4. Click Play.
  5. Once the channel is playing, go to View > Advanced Controls. A red Record button will appear in the toolbar.
  6. Click the Record button to start recording.
  7. Click it again to stop.
  8. Recordings are saved to your Videos folder by default (changeable in VLC preferences).

Changing VLC Recording Location

  1. Go to Tools > Preferences (or VLC > Preferences on Mac).
  2. Click the Input/Codecs tab.
  3. Under Files, change the Record directory or filename to your preferred location.
  4. Click Save.

For more Windows IPTV options, see our Windows PC IPTV guide.

Method 3: Recording with Kodi

Kodi supports recording through its PVR (Personal Video Recorder) system, though setup is more complex than TiviMate.

Steps

  1. Ensure the PVR IPTV Simple Client is installed and configured with your M3U playlist.
  2. You may need a PVR backend (like TVHeadend) for full recording functionality.
  3. Navigate to the EPG in Kodi: TV > Guide.
  4. Select a program and choose Record.
  5. Kodi will handle the recording based on your PVR backend configuration.

Note: Kodi’s recording setup is significantly more complex than TiviMate. For most users, TiviMate is the better choice for IPTV recording. See our Windows PC guide for Kodi setup details.

Method 4: Recording on MAG Devices

MAG set-top boxes (MAG 254, MAG 322, MAG 420, MAG 524, etc.) support recording to USB drives through their built-in IPTV portal.

Steps

  1. Connect a USB flash drive or external hard drive to your MAG box.
  2. Navigate to a live channel.
  3. Press the Record button on your MAG remote.
  4. The recording will save to the USB drive.
  5. Press Record again to stop.

MAG Recording Limitations

  • Requires a USB storage device — no internal storage recording.
  • Limited scheduling options compared to TiviMate.
  • Playback of recordings must be done on the MAG box or a compatible media player.

For MAG setup, see our MAG setup guide.

Storage Requirements for IPTV Recording

How much storage do you need? It depends on the stream quality:

Stream QualityStorage per Hour2-Hour Movie8-Hour Day
SD (480p)~1.5 GB~3 GB~12 GB
HD (720p)~2.5 GB~5 GB~20 GB
Full HD (1080p)~4 GB~8 GB~32 GB
4K (2160p)~10 GB~20 GB~80 GB

Storage Recommendations

Usage LevelStorage SizeApproximate Capacity (HD)
Occasional recording32 GB USB drive~12 hours
Regular recording128 GB USB drive~50 hours
Heavy recording / DVR replacement1 TB external hard drive~400 hours
Power user2 to 4 TB external hard drive~800 to 1,600 hours

USB Drive Formatting: Format your USB drive as exFAT for the best compatibility across devices. FAT32 works but has a 4 GB file size limit, which can cut recordings short.

Catch-Up TV: The Recording Alternative

For many users, Catch-Up TV (also called time-shifted TV or replay TV) eliminates the need for recording entirely. Catch-Up TV lets you go back and watch programs that aired in the past 24 to 72 hours — without needing to record anything.

How Catch-Up TV Works

  1. Your IPTV provider records popular channels on their server.
  2. When you browse the EPG and see a program that has already aired, you can select it and watch it from the beginning.
  3. No local storage is needed — the content is streamed from the provider’s server, just like a live channel.

Using Catch-Up TV in TiviMate

  1. Open the EPG guide.
  2. Navigate to a past program (shown in grey or with a clock icon).
  3. Select the program and choose Catch-Up or Play.
  4. The program will start playing from the beginning.

Note: Catch-Up TV availability depends on your IPTV provider. Not all channels support it. IPTVBROS includes Catch-Up TV on supported channels.

Using Catch-Up TV in IPTV Smarters Pro

  1. Open the EPG or channel guide.
  2. Find a past program on a supported channel.
  3. Select the program.
  4. If Catch-Up is available, a playback option will appear.

Requirement: You must use Xtream Codes login for Catch-Up TV. M3U playlists typically do not support Catch-Up.

Troubleshooting IPTV Recording Issues

Recording Not Starting

  • Verify TiviMate Premium is activated (recording requires Premium).
  • Check that a recording path is configured: Settings > Recordings > Recording Path.
  • Ensure the storage device has available space.
  • If using USB, ensure the drive is properly connected and detected by your device.

Recording Stops Unexpectedly

  • Storage may be full. Check available space on your recording drive.
  • If using FAT32 format, recordings over 4 GB will fail. Reformat as exFAT.
  • The IPTV stream may have been interrupted (server issue, internet drop).
  • Your device may have gone to sleep. Keep the device awake during recording: Settings > Display > Screen timeout > Never (or keep an app running).

Recording Quality Is Poor

  • Recording quality matches stream quality — you cannot improve it beyond what your IPTV provider delivers.
  • Ensure you are recording the HD or FHD version of the channel, not the SD version.

Cannot Find Recorded Files

  • Check your recording path in TiviMate: Settings > Recordings > Recording Path.
  • Recordings are in TS format. Use a file manager app to browse the recording folder.
  • If using a USB drive, the files are on the USB drive, not on your device’s internal storage.

Scheduled Recording Did Not Start

  • Your device must be powered on or in standby for scheduled recordings. A completely powered-off device will miss the recording.
  • Check that the correct time zone is set on your device.
  • Ensure your IPTV subscription was active at the scheduled recording time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can IPTV Smarters Pro record?

No. IPTV Smarters Pro does not have a built-in recording feature. For recording, use TiviMate Premium or VLC on a computer.

Recording IPTV for personal time-shifting purposes (watching later) is generally treated the same as recording cable TV with a DVR. Laws vary by jurisdiction. We recommend recording only for personal, private use.

Can I record multiple channels at once?

You can record one channel at a time per IPTV connection. If your subscription supports multiple connections, you may be able to set up simultaneous recordings, but this requires multiple instances of the recording app or multiple devices.

How long can I record?

As long as you have storage space. There is no time limit on IPTV recording in TiviMate. A 1 TB external hard drive can store approximately 400 hours of HD content.

Can I record IPTV on my phone?

Most mobile IPTV apps do not support recording. For the best recording experience, use TiviMate on a Firestick or Android TV box, or VLC on a computer.

Is Catch-Up TV better than recording?

For most users, yes. Catch-Up TV requires no storage, no setup, and no pre-planning. The only downside is that it typically covers only the last 24 to 72 hours and not all channels support it. If you need to keep content permanently, recording is the way to go.
